What are modes?
Modes are variations of scales that start on different degrees of the major scale. Each mode has a unique character: Dorian is jazzy, Lydian is dreamy, Mixolydian is bluesy, etc.
Which scales should I learn first?
Start with the Major and Minor Pentatonic scales - they're used in almost every genre and are easy to remember. Then progress to Natural Minor and Major scales.
